What is Sewer Drainage?
A sewage system is an underground network of pipes that holds sewage (normally wastewater mixed with human waste). All drains lead to sewers and all sewers will lead to a local treatment plant to properly dispose and treat waste accordingly. It’s also important to note that sewers are always artificial, as nature does not tend to produce complex networks that dispose of wastewater or water run-off.
The Difference Between House and Sewer Drainage
There are many differences between drains and sewers, but the biggest difference is the positioning of the pipes. The drainage pipe is the one that runs from your home to the community sewer that’s owned by your local municipality. While the pipes do lead to a community sewer line, it’s actually up to the property owner to maintain and repair the drains from their property to the sewer line.
In contrast, the sewer drainage line taking the wastewater from your property to a water treatment plant is the responsibility of your local water authority. The main sewer line will pass through your neighborhood and carry large volumes of waste and water from several properties to be treated with chemicals.
Types of Sewer Drain Pipes
There are many types of drainage pipes found in homes and businesses depending on the age and type of property you have. The most common type of pipe is found in the PVC pipe because it remains in place for an indefinite length of time when it’s installed correctly. Another pipe that may be found in your sewer drainage is galvanized steel because they tend to last a long time, 20 years at least. Lead pipes are no longer used due to their ability to damage the water supply and make it unsafe for future use.
What To Do If Your Sewer Drain is Clogged?
While it\’s easy to break any blockage in your drains inside your home, it’s a bit more difficult to do in your sewer drainage. Oftentimes, you’ll need to call in professional plumbers to help you open up the pipe’s pathway. Usually, this involves a sewer drain snake, a much longer tool than what you would use for regular piping.
If the plumber can’t unblock the sewer line, call another professional. It’s always good to get a second set of eyes and hands on the issue, as the price to replace sewer drains can be very high.
When to Replace Your Sewer Drainage?
If your main line backs up more than once a year, then it may be time for you to have professionals take a look at it. They will either recommend repairing it themselves or have the line entirely replaced. But, if you find you’re calling professionals to use their sewer drain snake more than once every year or two, it might be worth considering replacing it anyways. The difference in price between snaking vs. digging up the line to repair or replace it is tremendous.
