As a homeowner, you need to be on top of routine maintenance on your household appliances. This is especially true when it comes to your furnace. So, it’s important that you clean your furnace’s vital components, such as its blower fan. But, this can be tricky if you don’t know what you’re doing.

As one of the premier heating and cooling companies in New Mexico, B&D Industries, Inc. works on many furnaces. We’ve encountered countless wimpy heaters and have met some amazing innovations. Read our article below to learn how to clean the blower fan in your furnace.

Why Should You Clean Your Blower Fan?

Dirt is the biggest enemy of your furnace. It can waste fuel and drastically lower efficiency. Not only that, but a dirty furnace can result in higher energy bills due to needing more power to function properly. Dirt affects all three basic components of your furnace, so cleaning is the most important part of regular maintenance.

Let’s Get Started on That Blower Fan

The first few steps of cleaning your blower fan are fairly simple.

  1. Turn off power to the unit.
  2. Remove the doors on the unit to gain access.
  3. Remove the door switch to pull out the blower fan.

Once you’ve done this, you will need to dismount the control board. It is usually only held in place by a couple of screws, but make sure you do not remove it from the mounting bracket. You shouldn\’t need to disconnect any wires, but if you do, be sure to mark where they came from.

After that, you can dismount the blower. Two screws are holding the blower in place. Once they have been removed, the blower fan assembly should slide out easily. However, you should be careful of the wiring that is still attached touching your fingers.

Once you’ve dismounted the blower, now it’s time to clean it. This can involve:

  • Vacuum
  • Toothbrush
  • Paintbrush

Using a toothbrush or paintbrush, you can clean between the fan blades, motor housing, and the entire unit itself. Additionally, a vacuum will be good to keep the dust down and suck up any clump of grime that gets left behind.

What Benefits are There to Cleaning Your Blower Fan?

It’s important to understand that almost all electronically operated appliances work better when they’re clean. Once you’ve cleaned your furnace’s fan you can experience a multitude of benefits including:

  • Improved fan performance.
  • Increase in fan motor efficiency.
  • Removing large amounts of dust from your system and air.
  • Lowering your chances of a motor malfunction.
  • Less money going towards energy bills.
